An ironing Question

(this post edited to remove the reference to burning)
At retreat there are typically 2 or three irons going all day for 25 or so quilters. There's varying degrees of
quality
in these irons, but none are what you'd consider "top end" because their life expectancy isn't great. When I first picked up one of the irons at retreat this time, I was shocked at how much hotter and what a better job it did than mine. I mentioned to someone that this little light "cheapie" iron worked far better than my big heavy expensive iron, and was met with a chorus of complaints about the BMW of irons. I hadn't realized that A.) mine isn't performing like I would expect, and B.) that so many others had had the same experience with them, and then C.) how dumb I feel that I believed the hype.

Here's my question - what has your history with irons been? These are really important tools for us, right up there with the Sewing Machine, and we need to know the facts before we spend great gooey gobs of fabric bucks on non-fabric items. (next question is how does this stupid underline pop up and why, and how to make it go away?)
So - what do you iron with and why?

I can not help you with the underline...once I crossed out my entire blog. ALL the posts had a line going through them. That is how I "met" Linda. She was not really able to figure it out either, but I just went back and redid the last post and it took care of it.
As for the iron...I LOVE my $24 cheapy. They actually last quite a while and when they do go out I am not freaked over it. It does quite well...right now I have a GE brand, but I had a Panasonic that got stolen to use for clothes...I do not mix my quilting iron with my clothing iron.

I think you may be right on those expensive irons. But you know what? I feel the same way about expensive cars! Just a place to throw money that could be better spent elsewhere. (I do like them tho). About the underline: it looks like you have a link connection. Did you see the little hand? But the connection doesn't lead anywhere. The picture above it didn't come up on my screen. Try highlighting it and clicking the link button and see what it says. Curious isn't it?

I uaually buy cheap irons. I have a tendency to knock them onto the floor and I can't see spending alot of money on an iron to do this. My iron I have now I paid 4.99 for it at Goodwill and it works just fine. I probably won't ever own an expensive iron unless it is given to me as a gift. I have used them at sewing group and I have to say, I gravitate towards the cheaper ones. I think they iron better and have more wieght to them.

I just took a look at the code on your post. Between the photo and the next block of text there is a < span... > tag that I don't think should be there. Also, there is a < /span> tag missing. For every opening tag there should be a closing tag. Clear as mud?

I love my Black & Decker Classic iron. Cheap and heavy. The only drawback to this iron is the steam holes are big and sometimes catch on the corners of triangles if I forget to "lift and press".

Mine is a Panasonic--this is the second one I've had in the last three years as the first one gave out of me. But did I get a different brand? NO! I really do like this one, and with all the work it gets and the price for a new one, it still seems pretty darn reasonable. The auto shut off drove me nuts for years so I'd search for one without that feature, but it seems there are very few out there any more, so I've adjusted.

I couldn't agree with you more! For years and years I've used the cheapest irons I could find because I would drop it regularly or the kids would (mostly me). So the kids leave home and I buy the BMW iron last year --and not the cheapest one, either--and it is pitiful. Not only that, the BMW's travel version is pathetic too. Who knew? I'll never buy one again and am seriously considering dumping this one.

I have to agree with you about those expensive BMW irons. I've had 3 of them (yes, I'm a slow learner) and all of them leaked and only lasted about a year. I finally decided to buy a cheap-o iron at Target. I spent a whopping $9.99 for a White Westinghouse and it works great. It gets hot, it has steam, it doesn't have an automatic shut-off and best of all it hasn't leaked once.

I've had this cheap-o for about 10 months now - almost the life-span of that BMW iron and it's still going strong.

I'm too cheap to buy a BMW iron, but pressing is very important to me. I need to have shot of steam and it needs to have the right feel. I discovered the T-Fal Ultraglide Diffusion http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2714351 and it's the best iron I've found (costs about $40). I always take my own iron on retreats and everyone seems to love using my iron, I get many positive comments. No, not even this one lasts. I always buy a spare whenever I replace my iron so I'm never stuck without one.

Well you know me, cheap and easy. LOL. I keep buying the old, heavy GE's at garage sales and Goodwill. They steam like a house on fire and I *like* how heavy it is. I've also dropped mine a half a dozen times and it still works! You can't beat four bucks! I'm on my third one in about 12 years. That's a pretty good average life!

I have/had a "BMW" iron! Quit after about 3 years and would have to send it to "the city" and wait at least 3 months for the repair!! Not this "chick". (I got eggs to lay and "scratch" to peck!!) So...A cheap steam iron I bought and it works great. I also have 1960 GE dry iron that weighs a ton and is hotter than "hadie's".

P.S. I can iron w/the 1960 G.E. Dry Iron for at least 15 minutes AFTER it is turned off!!! Now that is HOT!!!

I had the exact same experience when I went to my last workshop and they bought their irons on a 2 for 1 special!!
